... and try to overlap the welds instead of place them next to each other. If you place the gun to the edge of the previous weld, you will weld for "thicker " material, it means less (or zero) burn on the panel.
Be careful of too much heat build up, especially on bodywork, as it will distort the metal.

Bit of a surprise today...
I put the boot floor back in position.
And also the rear sub-frame mounting panel, or heel board (not sure if this is the right term)?
Just to be sure, I took the rear sub-frame from storage and tried it on...
Now the problem is that with the rear subframe completely aligned, the heel board mounts are not in the right position, or are not aligned with the subframe. Shown in red below. The other side is the same.
I ordered this panel from M-Machine and I just looked at the invoice and it seems to be the correct one. Serial number 11.32.02.00 'Mounting panel rear subframe to 1991'. I will give them a call on Monday, but just wondering if anyone has had the same issue? It looks like the mounting nuts are not in the right position.
Thanks.
Victor.

Nice work! To mount the rear subframe you need the trunnions and rubbers etc, so will be right with them. http://www.minispare...58.aspx|Back to

Hi Alex, thanks. I was going to try them this afternoon, so that might resolve the issue.
So basically, it doesn'y matter if these are not aligned?

Apologies all, just watched a video now about mounting the subframe, and of course I need the trunnions and rubbers as Alex pointed out.
Phew! I thought I needed to send the panel back to M-Machine!
Anyway, I'm sure at least you guys had a laugh with my post!

The two nuts on the subframe are for fixing the rear radius arm (better said its corner plate).
So this has nothing to do with the subframe to body fixing.
Was still quite shocked when first reading your post...

Thanks Gilles. Yes, I took out the subframe more than a year ago, and just don't remember how it was done!
I panicked when I saw the hole didn't align, but all clear now.

Looks like the panel fits quite nicely and shouldn't need much fettling.
Keep it up!

Thanks Colin, yes it was a bit of a stupid day yesterday. Next time I will double check my own old photos before getting into panic mode!
Anyway, today I continued with the boot floor and the aligment of the mounting panel and rear subframe. First of all, I got the trunnions in place and tried to align the subframe and the mounting panel with the boot floor. I still need to clean the trunnions, get new bushes and potentially new nuts and bolts (these are very rusted).
I marked up the postion of the mounting panel in relation to the boot floor, and then I took it out of the car (again). With that in place, I fixed the mounting panel to the floor with 3 screws.
I also cleaned up the area where the mounting panel will be welded to the boot floor. I will also give it a lick of zinc primer before welding it in place.
With the boot floor and the mounting panel joined together, I put them back in the car.
I also added one screw on each side, to fix the boot floor to the companion bins.
Everything seems to be aligned and in place over here...
As another way of checking the aligment, I took dimensions from quarter panel to quarter panel, and checked that the center was in the middle of the mounting panel.
With that sorted, I tried the rear subframe one more time. This side is all good and aligned.
However, on the other side the rear trunnion is a bit off place
Then I realized that with the bushes, there's a bit of tolerance and movement as can be seen in this photo.
I guess I need to push this a bit to the left to get the right trunnion aligned with the holes in the floor.
I know I need to weld the stiffener plates to the boot floor, but that shouldn't affect the aligment, isn't it?
I run out of time today, so I will continue next weekend. A couple of questions though:
1- Should I weld the mounting panel to the boot floor out of the car, and then get them both together back to the car again? It seems that it worked with the screws, but not sure if this is the right thing to do.
2- Should I get the stiffener plates welded to the boot floor before installing it, or could this be done once the floor is in place?
Thanks in advance and have a nice week.
Victor.

I would get some new bushes and those trunnions cleaned up before continuing to be honest, there seems to be a lot of age in them and it'd be a real pity if that gave you any misalignment right now

I agree! I think that is the sensible thing to do.
Cheers.

Tighten the trunnion pins once the trunnion are bolted up to the car.
Helps with alignment

Thanks Ben, I will give it a go over the weekend.
I managed to get into the garage to start cleaning up the trunnions.
There's some shiny metal under all that dirt and grime!
I also gave it a lick of anti-rust primer, waiting for the final coat in gloss black.
Also received some goodies from Minimine.
I know the orignal bushes were black, but I couldn't help myself about buying the orange ones! I think they would look great with my orange interior.
Victor.
