Just fitted a new dab radio in my 98 Cooper, all working fine apart from it needs to re scan for stations every time I turn the ignition off. Is it the radio or a wiring issue? Thanks for any help!

Depends. If you're wiring is good then it's the radio. If not it's the wiring. Kinda hard to tell. Did you connect the permanent live properly?

I have a Sony Jukebox DAB unit in the house which scans as soon as you switch it on. I have a Pioneer DAB radio in the Motorhome which does the same but bought a Roberts portable DAB+ radio and it doesn't. There a DAB+ radio in our Skoda which doesn't need to scan so maybe the DAB needs to scan but the DAB+ doesn't.

I have several DAB radios in our cars (as my favourite station is Planet Rock) none of them scan on start up. The only time I had that was when the permeant live and switched live were reversed. I would double check that. The other thing that might do it, is if your signal strength is weak and it is trying to rescan to pick up better signal. Are you using a window mounted aerial as I have had limited success with those and now use a magnet mount passive Auto Leads one from Halfords for about £10.00  they are great.

Sounds like the ignition live is connected where a permanent live feed should be. Easy to test, does the head unit switch on with the ignition switched off?

The radio requires a permanent live when the key is removed  to retain it memory

I have one of these Kenwood units, all wired and working correctly. Every time it is switched to DAB it shows "updating list", this is quite normal for this model and takes 5-10 seconds.  As above try and find out if it's normal for your unit, otherwise it's likely the permanent live feed at fault.

Check the live and switched feeds, they may need reversed, you may also be able to turn off auto scanning?

A question from me regarding aerials... What's the difference between the DAB and non DAB types, is it purely signal type?

Great shout mate as this sounds like it’s possibly the problem! Will check this tomorrow, is it an easy switch if so?

Yeah it doesn’t just scan every time it forget all the preset stations I programme. Bit of hassle scrolling through all the time

Update: after a bit of thought and scrolling the newly fitted radio did not come with a ISO wiring harness so it’s plugged directly in. Is this the reason it basically resets after I turn the ignition off?
