The Timken wheel bearing kits don’t come with the retaining C clip / spacer. Does this mean it’s not required? I’m starting from scratch on these hubs so don’t have any from the previous strip down.

There is no C clip in any wheel bearing.

there was a seal spacer used on the older cars both drum and disc but this was dropped from the later cars and is perfectly reusable anyway so is not and never has been, as far as I am aware, in any bearing kit.

Thanks Nick.

Just to clarify, these are cooper 998 drive shafts / flanges (not the pot joint or hardy spicer with 7.5”)

So if I don’t have this spacers I don’t need to be concerned with locating any?

Just push the seals up to the bearings?

Nope leave a gap.  But I don’t think it really matters.

Just push the seals up to the bearings?

As Nick mentioned, no.

The Outer Seal is flush or can be pressed a but further in by 2 mm and the Inner Seal goes in to where the taper lead in finishes

Thanks for the picture.

I’ve actually found a couple of the spacers now. But they are quite thin compared with others I’ve seen. Mine are only 2mm ish wide and ones I’ve seen in the past have been more like 5 or 6mm. What’s right for my 998 cooper brakes?

I understand the thinner (2.5mm) spacers which I’ve found came off drum and 997/998 hubs which would have had roller type bearings originally. As I’ve fitted ‘S’ tapered bearings on my 998 Cooper should I retain the narrow spacer or get the wider (5.8mm) ‘S’ type ones? So what dictates which spacer is used, the type of bearing or the type of drive shaft being used?

The original ones. The thin. But I would not bother with them. Like I said they were removed from production.

The Thin ones were fitted for a very short time between the Outer Seal and the Bearing and the Thicker types between the Inner Seal and the Bearing.

After pulling down so many hubs and finding the seals butted up against the Bearings, I make and fit these to all hubs I do.
