So my Mk1 ran out of MOT earlier this month, but I won't be using it much until spring now, so I was planning on leaving a fresh MOT until then.

Obviously it is MOT exempt and a few years ago I went to the trouble of going to the post office and taxing it with a V112 form, to make sure it was recognised as exempt if it ever ran out. I remember at the time the lady in the post office didn't seem to understand what that form was for.

So now, when I run it through the the DVLA database it obviously shows as MOT expired (with footnote: this vehicle may be MOT exempt), my question is, how do I know the V112 was processed and it is officially exempt?

Someone mentioned on another thread recently when they taxed their exempt vehicle it had a box to tick online to say it is exempt and I've never seen that, but maybe thats because my car was always MOTd when I taxed it? Do I have to SORN it and re tax without an MOT for to be recognised as exempt?

I wouldn't worry, it is exempt and the records say it 'may be exempt', it won't be an issue.

I don't think you should just assume, where there's an application process but, isn't it linked to tax exemption? Can you have one without the other if the vehicle qualifies?

I expect the "may be exempt" is a generic disclaimer because not all 40yr old vehicles are.

The MOT covid extension has just run out on my '69 Commer camper and I've not bothered to take to the MOT place as I don't think there will be any camping trips for a while. The DVLA site says that the MOT has expired but being a historic vehicle does this mean I can still legally drive it on the road without any further declaration? I can't find anything on the site that gives a definitive answer.

I remember when I taxed my other Camper, which is a '71, and I was offered the opportunity to declare that any modifications were within the acceptable limits for historic vehicles and so be exempt from the MOT test, I'm wondering if I'll need to wait until I tax the '69 before I can do the same for that vehicle.

It's my understanding that you cannot use the vehicle legally on the road after the expiration of an MOT, unless you have informed the DVLA that one is not required via the V112.

In common with most recent legislation, it's about as clear as mud.

Better to be safe than sorry, fill out the form and send it in, would be my suggestion.

I agree it is about as clear as mud, but as I said above I did fill out the V112 when I taxed my car a few years ago, but it had a valid MOT at that time.

I think I'll just SORN it and re tax at post office with a V112, see what happens.

If it age exempt and you’ve  tax it (for free class as historic) then it’s MOT exempt.

That’s it.

I did fill in forms correctly at the time and my 1962 Austin Mini Countryman has continued to show on the online MOT checker as expired with the red banner.

The reminder about tax comes from DVLA every year and is completed - just done it in fact.

I would print off the form fill in and sign it and shove it in the glove box - done.

I don’t have a glove box! Seriously, thanks tough.

I’m curious if it is the same for everyone else with MOT exempt cars?

I’ve just checked my 67 as the MoT expired last week. I’ve never done anything towards making it MOT exempt.

On the MOT check site it has a red box and says MOT expired.

On the tax check site it has a green box and says no MOT results returned.

Thanks Graeme, good shout, I'd forgotten I could check there, and mine says the same on tax site, no MOT results returned.

Odd how they don't aline!

Related question...

Do you need a a current MoT to claim exemption?

I was under the impression you did, but I know somebody sticking a Moggy Thousand  together that thinks he can just fill in his V112 and take to the road.

No you don't, just fill in the V112 form when you tax the car at the post office, link above.

Thanks,

It does seem ridiculously open to abuse, guess I just found it too hard to compute

Does a car need a valid MoT to transfer a registration off it?

That always the way they stopped people plate raping scrap cars.
