Gearbox Help Please

5Y8iAcs.jpgAfternoon guys. A friends mini was jumping out of second gear, we have separated the gearbox and found this piece in the bottom of the gearbox, whst is it?
It was only jumping out of second gear - no other gears

From the picture these look like copper..

Is that correct? Selector fork possibly.

What are the symptoms of the fault?

its not copper no. the fault is it jumps out of second gear ONLY - no other gears.......

Something for scale would help. Diff shim? Primary gear thrust washer?

 

Nothing that'd be related to 2nd gear  :-|

Did that come out the sump plug? Or is it bigger..
Is the box off the block?

Oh dear,,,,

That looks like part of the Mainshaft, it's machined with a spacer / separator that goes between 2nd and 3rd Gears, and it's broken off.

 

It's the thin part of the shaft that stands well proud of it. This would also be why it jumps out of 2nd.

We separated the gearbox it was sat in the bottom

If you look between 2nd and 3rd Gears, you would normally see it.

 

The Laygear's been removed in this photo, but I'm sure you'll be able to work out where to look from it

yu might be able to see that area down the dizzy hole with a torch.
