Hello again, here is a update on the DIY FWD R1 Mini. Its....... finished!!
Sems to be working pretty well. Blows the tires in first and second gear.LOL
you are a god.
I bow before you.
I've just been and picked up my R1 engine and I've got all this fun to come. Having panned through all the threads you have made it all look very easy, and I'm pretty sure its not.
I'm gonna try and use a 2006 20 valver, some say its too big, some say it should be fine
Just one question - did you make your own cradle / subframe and are you willing to share your secrets?
yours hopefully
martin.

Changed the final drive from 3:1 to 2.75:1 as it was geared to low IMO with the small sprocket.
Everything vent good the chain is holding up fine, not much torque steer either. And you can feel the car has gotten alot lighter in the front. I am suprised of how long the usable rev range is on this engine, it pulls pretty good in the low revs, you can cruise around at 2000rpms. Did alot of 1,2,3 gear what runs up to redline while testing the chain mechanism, and its fun changing gears with this thing, the ratios is extremly close. And sorry i dont have any drawings of the frame yet. You guys just have to look at the pictures instead

How much larger are the 20v versions.......would they fit under a clubman front for example??
not sure - nothing to make comparisons with - I do have the engine here with me now, and I've set up a computer in the garage ready for drawing stuff up as I mjeasure it.

They are not much bigger, the cylinder head has been angled more forward making the height of the motor that little bit lower, with angling the cylinder head forward has made the depth of the motor deeper from front to back.
The new engine is actually smaller and more compact in volume but has different dimensions that make it an even tighter fit in the standard roundfront mini front end and maybe not possible as the earlier engine is already extremely tight, the clubman is 5" longer so it would certainly be easier, but it would require a completly new kit from pro-motive for the newer R1, as the mounts, dimensions, exhausts, space at the front, wiring, cooling, throttle, etc, etc are all different, unless your up to doing the conversion yourself.

Are you still using normal mini suspension at the front with HiLo's perhaps or coilovers? I'm assuming the fan will on almost constantly with the location of the radiator
Cheers and well done

Still stock suspension with HiLo`s. Actally the cooling fan almost never comes on, just when standing still a while. The real test will come when driving it on a race track.
I also replaced the stock mini battery with the bike battery, saved 14 kg just on that.
