I've tried googleing the answer with no success.

When my mini was new back in 1975 would the number plates be yellow/white or would it off being black with silver/white lettering

Its Currently on yellow/white aluminium with black plastic lettering. As much as I do think these are original to the car id like to go black plates but if black plates had stopped going onto new cars back in 1975 then I'll keep with what I've got

They would've originally been white/yellow in 1975.

All Historic Tax exempt class vehicles now have the option to use black and silver plates, even if they are post 1973.

"From April 2019, vehicles registered before the 1st of January 1979 can legally display a black and silver number plate providing they have applied to the DVLA and are registered with the 'historic vehicles' tax class."

I had a tip from an ex-police officer friend and fellow Mini enthusiast.

If your Mini is not strictly eligible to run black/white plates, go and buy a personalised number plate pre-1973. If you fit that to your later car with black/white-numbers, it is extremely unlikely that any police patrol will ever stop you as most officers will just think it an old and classic Mini. You can buy a 1968-ish plate for c.£300 or less.

It would have come with white / yellow plates.

I’ve seen original plates as early as 1967 which were white / yellow versions rather than black and white.

I’ve fitted my ‘74 with yellow pre reflective plates from Tippers as in my opinion black and white plates on anything after ‘72-‘73 look wrong. My 1960 had black plates and looks as it should.

Tippers make a good 70’s plate which is what I fitted.

The pressed aluminium ones just don’t look right to me.

In the 1970's we used to fit reflective plates to make our old Mini's look newer!
