If you're using an actual Helicoil or equivalent thread repair kit the tap is sized for the kit. If you're trying to replace the tap you'll need the actual tap from a kit. They are usually marked 5/8 UNC Helicoil, however as you know it's bigger than 5/8. I've never seen just the tap offered, however I've never looked for one. The next larger sizes of fractional UNC taps will have different thread pitch. If you need the hole/drill size my kit is 21/32"

You won’t get one. Use the tap that came with the kit.

You won’t get a bolt - it is a very specific size probably unique to re-threading kits as the tpi is that of a smaller thread size.

 

If you need to clean a thread out prior to fitting as new helicoil you will need to either buy, or borrow, the correct tap.

Sorry, I rather confused here.

 

Is it that;-

 

     i)   the Thread in the Case is Damaged and you just like to clean that up with a normal Tap, or

     ii)  is the Thread Stripped and you need to Helicoil it, or

     iii)  it is Helicoiled and that's damaged and you'd like to clean that Thread up ?

And by the correct one  you will need to know what the original kit was.  Helicoil or recoil or any of the other 100s out there as they don’t all use the same thread profile.

 

so I would buy a kit and use the tap that comes with it and the insert that comes with that.

Yeah I agree with all these problems. Not sure what the best course of action is.

 

Previous owner had helicoiled sump - badly. The coil came out with the plug.

As a temp repair I managed to get the coil back in, the plug was so tight I was worried the casing would crack so now it leaks a bit.

 

My plan was to get the old coil back out, clean the thread, and put and new coil in properly then ptfe tape the sump plug and if it seals, leave as is and do oil changes through the dipstick with a vacuum.

You'll need to know what brand of repair kit it was in order to replace the insert. As Nick touched on, they are all different and do not interchange, ie, if it was a Genuine Helicoil Brand, you won't properly fit a Recoil Insert in to it.

 

I feel you'd be better off fitting a Timesert or making up one of these;-

PTFE Tape doesn't seal against Oil.

It can be done In-car, you only need remove the Castor Rod on the RH Side to get straight access, no different to doing a Helicoil in car.
