Fuel Line Replacement

While the Rear Subby is off, and I'm replacing the front to back brake pipe, I thought I might as well replace the fuel pipe.

 

The car is a 1991 Cooper Carb, and I'll be keeping the HIF44, but the engine will be a "fast road" 1330.....

 

So my questions are:

 

1) Do I replace the fuel pipe with 1/4 OD pipe, or is there any advantage with increasing the diameter?

 

2) Is copper pipe OK, or is Copper Nickel preferable?

 

3) I was thinking of fitting a Fuel Filter on the rear subframe, between the Tank and the solid fuel pipe. Is that the best place, as close to the tank as possible? I might fit one before the Carb as well...

 

4) Is there any benefit fitting a fuel shut off tap after the fuel tank?

I will be interested in answers to 3 and 4, as they are on my to do list.

Apart from a bit of extra security and making it easier to run the car dry if going into storage, I thought a fuel tap would be useful when changing the filter.

Ideally you want the fuel filter as close to the carb as possible (so the pieces of hose that eventually degrade are caught).
I have mine at the back subframe purely because its a struggle to fit one in the engine bay.

I use 8mm Microbore and 1/4 inch fuel safe hose, I heat the ends of the hose in a cup of hot water, it gives a better seal but let's the hose expand a little over the pipe.

Generally I try to keep my hose lengths as short as possible.

I use a pair of needle nose vise grips to clamp the fuel hose for draining or changing.

I prefer to have the filter closer to the tank and low. I've always concern with potential leaks on hot parts in the engine bay. I might be a bit safer on the rear sub.

I did this some time ago. I remember bending the pipe round the front bulkhead was awkward. I used Copper Brake pipe.

I always put the filter as close to the Carb as possible, though I don't see why you cant put one at each end.

I've mounted mine on the inner wing strengthener next to the radiator just fits in snug

1) unless its a real track car you don't need a bigger bore.
2) Kunifer or steel is preferable.
3) never put a fuel filter in front of a mechanical fuel pump. Always after.
4) it makes it easier to shut of the fuel. No risk damaging the lines with a vice grip and a clever anti theft device. Also ideal to make you wonder why it wont start... ;)

I’m going to go for 1/4 kunifer, shut off on rear subby and filter near the carb!
