Hi guys,

I know this has been discussed in the past, but I wanted to bring it up again in case there have been any changes to the variety and quality of products to choose from.

What are peoples preferred methods of keeping on top of rust on a car that you drive every day? For me, if I spot an area under the car that looks like it needs attention, then I'll wire brush back to bare metal, treat with Kurust, paint with Schultz underseal, and lastly a brush coating of Waxoil.

This seems to work nicely on the Mini which is kept in the garage, but I've been using this process on my all-weather daily driver, and I've noticed a few areas coming back after a few months. I also think Waxoil isn't as good as it used to be, as it dries up after a while.

It would be great to hear what other people preferred methods and products are!

Cheers

Chris

I like Bilt Hamber's products, in particular the Dynax UC (underbody clear) wax and S50 cavity wax.

Got to agree, i'm using Bilt Hamber products at the minute and I can't fault them.

Kurust or Jenolite

Etch prime
High build prime
Gravitex stonechip

2 coats of each of the above
Then brush on 2 coats of paint, or if metallic body colour is preferred I'd spray 4 coats.

Unless you remove the wheels and subframes every week to wash the small crevices then you will never have it perfectly clean.

I hose the underside once a week then every day in winter.

Try some Infinity Wax snowfoam for the best cleaning power by far, especially noticeable in the winter.

Hope this helps

I dont think the Schultz underseal is particularly helpful, you'd be better with a wax straight on top of the painted repair.

This may be obvious, but keep all drain holes clear, especially doors and sills. The mini's BIW was built with plain steel panels i.e. no galvanised steel. As you know there are many water ingress areas so it must be let out. Apart from that paint everything after using one of the many tannic acid or phosphoric acid treatments.

Here in North America where roads are heavily salted for 4-6 months a year, people have found products like FluidFilm and WoolWax to do very well as undercoating. Loads of long term reports on YouTube showing how well it holds up compared with other products. Some of the painted on type of rubberized coatings are terrible. They trap water and salt once they begin to peel and flake.
