Hi;

Just after some confirmation on the process of shimming the Diff Output Housings.

I have been following the MED Engineering Gearbox Rebuild and the Mini Mania version. In the MED one (at about 7:19) he mentions that the gasket is 0.016" and you need an additional 0.003" for pinch.

I only have two shims left over from the strip down (I have not measured them yet) but with those fitted I can only get between a 0.003" and 0.004" feeler gauge in so about 0.035". Would this mean in theory I need 0.0155" of shims?

I am going to measure the shims I have and work out what I need, but see MS only do three sizes, 0.010", 0.020" and 0.006".

Pic for show :-)

Anyone?

Just watched Cole from Classic Mini DIY and he calculates the Shims before he put the Diff Cover on - always more than one way to skin a cat I guess!!

Started watching the Mini Mania one again and when he started hitting the Diff Cover with a ball pein hammer I switched it off!!

Cripes! I'm trying to remember how I did it when I did my gearbox, think I just followed the Guessworks guide. But your maths makes sense to me.

Had some correspondence from John Guess, the clearance is also affected by the type of bearings in the Diff. 0.004" for Thrust Bearing and 0.000" - 0.001" for deep grooved roller bearings, which I apparently have. The compressed thickness of the gasket is apparently not 0.016" but 0.007".

So I am getting about 0.003" clearance with 2 x 0.010" shims fitted, and the clearance needs to be 0.007" - 0.008" so I need another 0.004" - 0.005". This means the sum total of my shims (inc the ones that are already there, needs to be 0.024" - 0.025". I have ordered 4 x 0'006" shims which means I can get 0.0024" or 0.022" depending how I configure them with the ones I have.

Phew - brain hurts!!

I happened upon this in my Haynes book yesterday and thought of you.

Well spotted - John Guess was spot on :-)

Just checked my Haynes and this detail is not in it. I have the 1969 - 2000 version, I need to get the slightly older version I think. Which edition do you have?

I also have two Metro manuals and it is in there albeit slightly different.

What's at para 11, fitting the Diff Housing?

This is from the brown/orange one which IIRC is 1959-1978. I got lucky on Amazon and paid 50p for it. I'll check para 11 next time I'm in the workshop.

When they trusted / encouraged you to do more work yourself :-)

This is the extract from the Metro Haynes:

I think the Mini one is easier to follow.
