Hi;

I am in the process of rebuilding my gearbox.

I have started to build the mani shaft, following MED Engineering, MiniMania and Classic Mini DIY videos :-) As well as an Austin Rover Repair Manual.

3rd and 2nd Gear are on and I now need to build the Synchro Hubs before fitting them.

Whilst gathering the parts I noticed a few subtle differences and obvious differences that don't appear to get explained very well, if at all, in any of the material I am using as a guide.

First up:

Baulk Rings

In my gearbox rebuild kit the baulk rings come in two separate bags, one labelled 3rd and the other labelled 1 2 4 (presumably in relation to the gears.

I can work out where 1 and 2 are used, but 3 and 4 are the confusing ones. Where does the baulk ring labelled 3 go? Does it go on the 3rd gear side of the synchro hub on the main shaft?

What's the difference between them?

Synchro Hubs

It's easy enough to wrk out which part goes with which, due to the difference in the teeth on the internal splines, but it does not mention anything about lining up the three sections of teeth on the inside of the outer with the inner piece, seem obvious when you look closer at it but easy to miss?

The next thing I discovered (and only after watch one of several videos on building up the synchro hubs) is that the internal part of the 1st / 2nd synchro hub has a slightly higher lip on the internal face on one side, again I can find no reference as to which side this face should sit in relation to the outer?

I have taken these pics showing how I think they go, however, confirmation on if I have it correct would be appreciated.

Many thanks

If they are all new baulk rings, there should be no difference between them.  There are different ones available, but I wouldn't expect a rebuild kit to use different types and, even if they did, 3rd would be the last one I'd put a special/better one in for.  But yes, 3rd gear baulk ring sits on 3rd gear - I'm not sure why 3&4 should be more confusing than 1&2?

Good picture of 1st/2nd hub here:

The higher lip is orientated away from the side of the outer that has the teeth.

If you do a search on the forum, I have made a posting where I talk of the issue with 3rd or 4th gear Baulk Rings Burning out.

It's from a machining error in the late Cases.

Rover's fix was to grind the 3rd Gear Baulk Ring thinner.

I machine and grind a spacer to make up for this error, then standard Baulk Rings fit all Gears.

All sorted, the 3rd gear baulk ring is a different size.
