Hi everyone - changing my oil filler cap today for the first time (had the car 8 years and realise it should have been done before now). The problem is: how do you remove the 'ring' which stops the cap from getting lost? I.e., the circular part attached to the cap. The lip around the hole on the engine head is wider than the ring. Is it best to try to cut it off, or is there a knack to this? It seems really obvious but I just can't work it out...

I just cut them off to get the old cap off the engine, then cut the retainer off at the poppet on top of the cap and just take care not to lose the cap

I've just changed one for a customer.

I just pulled the ring with my finger tips on both hands and it slipped over no problem.

It's designed this was otherwise it would be pointless it being there to prevent the cap being lost

As Nick and Ben have mentioned, they will stretch a little.

I just grab the bit of plastic that joins the cap and ring, at the ring end, and pull it upwards over the lip.

The ring does have a bit of give  :o.

Thanks all. I think the cap may well have been the original! The ring had a lot less give than the new one, which went on easily. Got it off in the end with brute force and a thin blunt kitchen knife.
