So it's good for going around town then.
That's all I'll be doing.

I had a 998 with a 256 cam which I used around town for pizza delivery in the 1990s.  Very nippy, very good on fuel economy and pulled from very low revs.  For out of town work it was a bit tame.  The stage 3 head is the bit you really need too.

I think you'd be happy with a 266, if timed in as they recommend or even 2 degrees advance (and I'd allow a further 2 degrees for chain settling). Timed in on their recommended numbers, it will come on at around 1200 RPM and even when off it won't be too bad. Setting it a couple of degrees advanced will bring it on even sooner. For around town, as long as you don't go for a crazy tall final drive, this would be fine.

I had a 998 with a 266 and nicely modded 12G295 head and twin hs2 carbs.

I can honestly say it’s one of the best and most enjoyable engines I’ve ever had in a mini.

You will love the 266 cam, but to get the best you do need some improvements to the head. In particular remove most of the valve guide bosses, especially on the inlet, smoth off the 'short side radius' where the inlet throat transitions to the valve seats and de-shroud around the inlet valves a bit. Then measure, calculate and skim the head to get the ideal compression ratio of around 9.5:1.

For the road, you don't need to spend a lot getting a so-called 'Stage 3' head. 'Stage 3' means very little and a small amount of work which you can do yourself will show a good improvement when combined with a nice cam such as a 266.

If the car was for competition were tenths of a second per lap are vital, then have a fully re-worked head, but for the road it really is not necessary, especially if you could start with a 295 head. Vizards book shows what you can do yourself easily.
