Hi
Just replaced a torn steering gaitor.
I cannot get the track rod end bolt up into the hub again. It lines up well. When I turn the nut on the bolt, it just spins round within the track rod end.

I put trolley jack directly under the track rod end and raised it as far as it would go to try and get the hub to grab the non-threaded tapered part of the bolt that goes through the hub but no joy.

I'm stumped.

Been a good day largely speaking - HiLo's installed (top arm removal was a horrible job). Cone was 2 inches shorter! Changed a CV boot and regreased the bearing. I just can't reassemble that darn tie rod end. I have it all to do again on the passenger side.

Just check the nut too. Some of these are now M10 x 1.0, M10 x 1.25 or 3/8" UNF !

It is worth looking at the threads. If it spins before the nut's  been screwed any distance on. A scissor joint splitter could burr over the top thread a bit,

18 mm socket ?

I thought it was more like 13/14mm

Try large mole grips a rod track rod end and the housing on the hub and a squirt of gt 85 on the threads

The originals were 3/8" UNF and took a 9/16" spanner - close to 14 mm.

The replacements I get have an M10 x 1.0 Thread and the nut takes a 17 mm spanner. I guess we may now need to add an 18 mm to that too !

I have had the issue you mention, but this was due to there being a need to put the track rod end through as thoroughly as you can, then turn the road wheel slightly, so in effect you are chocking the shaft of the track rod stopping it rotating as you try to tighten the nut on.

However, make sure the nut goes on the track rod end easily first, no point in trying to put a knackered nut on the thread, and do check the thread of the track rod just to make sure it's not knackered either.

Moke has rightly pointed out the different thread sizes, pain in the but, but yes it happens.
