I was told that in the later days of Mini production Rover were so bad at paying their suppliers that they often ran out of stuff such as cams and they fitted whatever was in the stores. So you could have an MG Metro cam or one from a very basic engine, and who now has the specification for those cams? When I was building a car for competition a few years ago it was mandated that it had to have a standard cam. The car was a 1990 Cooper 1275 and I could not discover the cam specification, so I fitted a new MG Metro cam on the basis that no-one could prove it non-standard. I believe the max lift at the valve was 0.320" with timing at 110 degs ATDC.

oh right, i dont think its anything special, i can see that from looking at it.

could you please mate, answer me a question, i know inches, we use them at work for measuring most of the time. Now, 1", 1/2", 15/16"

I dont understand when i use a vernier and it says measurements like 0.320" is that in tenths of an inch? thanks

I can't find the details now but I remember there being two different cams in the A+ 998 for the high compression and low compression engines. If I remember correctly the high compression one was similar to the 997 cooper cam.

The vernier measures in thousandths of an inch .  0.500 = 1/2 inch

oh right,! i think i would have the high comp one as its got flat top pistons.

What is a good compression ratio to take it up to? I plan on using the standard cam head now, and getting the compression right up. Ill be using spi injection too if i can get a manifold

I get it now about the inches. thankyou

998a+ cam
Inlet 9/41 exhaust 49/11 @ 0.017" at the lobe

Lift inlet 0.265" lift exhaust 0.235"

0.031" lift at split overlap.

LSA 107.5

Inlet LCA 106.

The compression is already too high for todays fuel, better performance will be had if the static compression ratio is lowered to 9.5:1

I have one of these engines in my Traveller with the standard compression (10.3 ) and personally I think its one of the sweetest standard 998 engines there is.

I also have a '96 SPi Low compression ,9.6 ( Coopers are 10) 3.1 final drive whereas my Traveller final drive is 3.44. Driving style in each car is quite different. SPi has low down torque and doesn't need to be reved as much as the Traveller which revels in high revs.  Don't know what final drive would suit you best.

thanks for the reply again, to be fair, no one will know until i get this car mapped! The 3.44 if that is what is in the engine [it is actually out of a metro and never thought until now to see what diff is in it!]  would be fine. Itll buzz along all day id imagine on the motorway and pull ok down the lanes. im expecting it to drive well with mapped ignition curve instead of a dizzy wildly guessing.

I was thinking of messing with the chambers in the head etc, but itll just be ok as it is...

;)
