Hello

I’m planning on fitting a set of these pressed aluminium plates to my 1990 cooper.

I have them on my skoda (road car) and I think the look good. The only problem is that they sometimes start to come loose after a few months.

How do you all fix your number plates to the car? I’m afraid with the boot swinging open the plate may fall off!

Personally i've always found a GOOD quality double sided sticky tape does the job for at least 5 years, don't even bother using those pathetic little sticky pads they supply.

If you're desperate not to use either the sticky tape, nut & bolt, or pop rivet method you could try using a high-strength PU adhesive sealant  -it's often used to attach things like body kits.

Use one recommended on car forums such as Silkaflex or Tiger Seal to name but two (my Fiats side skirts haven't budged an millimeter even after all these years).

Not quite sure how easy it would be to remove the plates if you ever needed to so it's not something i would try!

I think they can change the look of the car quite a bit.

I double sided taped mine ontop of the old plastic ones
I used Würth double sided tape which has been on there for 3 years no problem

You can buy Normfest tape from euro car parts which is made by Würth so should be the same quality or very close

Ive got a 1990 Cooper and personally I think pressed plates don't look right.

 

What does look correct for period, is the pre 2001 numberplate font, which some plate suppliers can make up, the font is larger and correct for period, as the current font used on plates wasn't available until, you guessed it, 2001.

 

Example here, from Fancyplates.com, loads of other places, they have a few Pre 2001 fonts, this is "UKPre2001(a)" at the top and current UK Legal at the bottom.

Thanks for that. Yes I know the pressed plates look good on a modern(ish) German car, but I had my doubts about the mini.

I’ll look into getting the older font plates.

I have the pressed plates on two cars, both either screwed (rear) or nut and bolt( front)

My '98 has pressed plates but it's a 3-number 3-letter registration so looks fine.

 

The rear is attached using the usual 3mm sticky strips. For the front I fitted a standard perspex plate using c/sunk screws so that they're flush, then I fitted the pressed plate on top with 3mm sticky pads as per the front. No problems with adhesion of either plate.

Stainless steel self tappers in the round plastic coveres, yellow or white as required.

My Mk1 has black and silver pressed plates which suit it;s age. The back one has obviously been sikoflexed or similar onto the hinged number plate holder on the boot. It is never coming off!

Thanks folks. Bobbins or Cal, do you have pictures of your plates/minis which I could see? I’m nearing the MOT stage so need to decide soon- I’m still on the fence!

Both bought from Ebay, they are the raised letter type but only 2 or 3 mm. I can get close up images of the black and silver plate if you need.

It depends on how strict your MOT tester is if you fit the wrong style of plate.

That's what we have done on that blue car, they look good but I'd advise reinforcing the front plate (with a piece of suitable thickness metal)as they're easily bent.
