Yes indeed, I was simply meaning that the settings will need changed when on the road under load

Got ya. You can't beat a bit of oil blending.

I totally agree chaps, it'll all come clear once it's up and running and on the rolling road. I guess the best I can get at this stage is to get it working mechanically how it should whilst on the bench. Maybe comparing the speed drop of the pistons of these two compared to the speed drop of the single HIF is not really comparable when they're on the bench? Will still experiment with different viscosity's of oil in one compared to SU oil in the other.

I had 20/50 in my HS4 carb, I'd sent the car back to the engine builder who changed to his preferred mix (10w40 engine oil and duck oil mix) the car ran ok but throttle response was rubbish. I'd altered back to the 20/50 oil and all is well, so it does make a difference

Top man. Comparing drop speed on the bench will be the same on an HIF, but the carb retaining spring isn't built into the linkage on an HS so is harder to check, but you will work something out, I'm sure

It's an easy task to play around with, as I say my cars use 20w50 oil, I only need about 50ml from dry, topped up once a month when running as a daily. Like yourself, I used to play around with oils and I just cant get the cars to respond to my liking when not using 20w50, mind you I'm unsure what damper spring I have in them. ( 2x single HS4 and 1x HIF38 carb on 3 cars, all running 20w50 oil, but different needles)

So a little update, if really only for anyone that has a similar issue and does a topic search on here and wants some kind of solution! I bought two new 8114 damper rods along with two red springs. Fitted them and both carbs are pretty much more or less operating the same regarding resistance lifting the pistons and drop speed. It pays to replace old, worn and unknown parts with new parts that you actually know are in as new condition and are matched! Just have to wait for the rebuild kit from minispares now.
