I am trying to get a tachometer to work on my Elf. I bought a cheap 52mm tachometer to go into one of the holes in the dash, the other hole now has a dual gauge.

According to the instructions, the wires are Red - Ignition 12v, Black - battery neg, green to coil neg. there is also another red & black for the backlighting. The engine is a 1275 A+ with electronic ignition.

I picked up a live & earth behind the dash and connected the green to the Neg on the coil.

When I switched on the ignition I saw the needle go straight to 8000rpm. I assumed the green may be wrong so disconnected it. The needle was still on 8k. So with only the red (pos) & black (neg) connected the tachometer goes straight to 8 when switched on!

is this correct or is the gauge goosed?

it sounds correct, does the gauge have a switch on the back at all to adjust for amount of cylinders etc?

also did you try to run the car as maybe the gauge calibrates on first use.

Yes, switch on the back, 8, 6 & 4 cylinders, set to 4 cylinders.

No not run it with Tachometer connected, will try it next time I’m working on the car. Thanks

Sounds like a duff gauge if just power to the gauge is maxing it out.
