So I’m just to swap out the 998 out of my mini for a replacement 1275.
Been doing a bit of research on what updating the V5 paperwork, and DVLA website says along with the form a letter from a garage with the engine number on is needed.
The riveted on plate has long gone, so any suggestions for finding the number or what else I could do?
Cheers

The engine number could be in the logbook (V5)

The old engine number (currently fitted) is in the log book, but I’m going to need to get it changed for the replacement 1275 engine number

As I've read the instructions as a garage hasn't replaced the engine you're not going to get a letter from one. I would send a letter from yourself stating the changes and the new engine number along with the v5 and see what happens.
I'm in Woodley if you need a hand at all when we're all let loose send me a PM.

Makes sense, although I’ve not got the new engine number as the id plate is long gone...

That could be handy to know, cheers ?

Make up you're own number, go to a local garage and kindly ask if they can write a letter for you confirming that this engine with engine number has been fitted to your car and then send it off.

Note that there is no need if your Mini is tax-exempt, also many feel it is not essential on later Mini's as the taxation class won't change as it is not based on engine size or emissions like most modern cars......but you may be happier to inform the DVLA due to possible insurance problems.

Changes To Engine Details For Historic Vehicles (DVLA)

This change came in to force in 2011 and applies to all tax-exempt Mini's and classic cars (was pre-1973 and now 40 year rolling each year) and has been agreed due to the potential difficulties in providing supporting evidence/documentation for old/scrap replacement engines for historic/classic cars and also due to the fact that they are not taxed based on engine size/capacity in any case:

Changes to engine details for historic vehicles
DVLA confirmed that this policy has been reviewed and that it will no longer be necessary for keepers of vehicles in the Historic class – date of manufacture before 1 Jan 1973 (now 40 year rolling) – to provide evidence to support an engine change notification. (18/02/2011)

"ACE wanted further clarification on the use of the word ‘Minor’ and went back to DVLA.

We were pleased to receive this reply:-
"The word 'minor' is used in the context that the Federation considered that a change of engine was a small alteration to a classic vehicle.
The requirement for documentary evidence for an engine change was introduced because of concerns expressed by VOSA when assessing kit conversions .
After further consideration it has been agreed with VOSA that Historic vehicles were unlikely to be a source of these concerns and we were therefore able to review the policy.
Documentary evidence to support an engine change for any Historic vehicles will no longer be required irrespective of the cc’s."
ACE thank the FHBVC for gaining this valuable exemption."

I have a similar issue as Mark, swapping the original 998 with a 1275 and like him want to do things by the book to satisfy both the DVLA and any future insurance company I will be using.

My Mini is currently approaching its 38th year (October 82 Mayfair) and unlikely to be on the road before its 40th so does this mean I will not have to get the V5 updated with the new engine number? Obviously if this is the case I would write as suggested and inform the DVLA of the change to satisfy my insurance criteria.

You still want to update V5C, no matter what age of vehicle, for insurance reasons
