Is there an alternative to a Flywheel puller ...??

I have the engine out and on a stand, and because of the current lockdown I can't just go to Halfords and get one

Would I damage anything if I try to knock the flywheel off through the starter hole? would I be wasting my time?

There has to be another alternative ... alternatively is there anyone in the Widnes area that can lend me one ... I can get one from MiniSpares but its a week postage and and I can't carry on without one ..... What a nightmare!!!!

many thanks for any help

Knocking the flywheel off through the starter hole with a sledge hammer was the way local garages used to do it before pullers became widely available.

If you can, get a, let's say 3/4" , bar that will come past the rad;  this give you confidence to really clout;  a 2 lb hammer hitting the flywheel is not enough.

I used to use a pile of bricks to support the hitting end of the bar, the other end resting through the transfer casing.

Rotate the flywheel after each clout.

Order one and wait or expect to be spending lots of money on smashed parts.

Halfords are still delivering aren’t they?

Thanks Deadsquare

The engine is on a stand so have access and a little more room than if it was in the car .. I was thinking a length of 2x1 end onto the flywheel and "gently" tapping it from behind ... I just didn't want to do damage without having a puller

Hi Nicklouse

Yes they are .. It was the wait I dint want to do if I didn't need to ... I didn't plan ahead for being off work and now can't do any more without it

The puller will arrive before you get the flywheel of by gently tapping it.

Or you can collect from your local store.

I don't advise this method if the engine is teetering on a stand.  It needs to be firmly located, such as the gearbox against 1/2 a railway sleeper against a tree.

We are talking about an immovable object and an irresistible force.................something has to give, the flywheel.

Just bought a generic bearing puller from Halfords, (doing a haldex service on my Freelander tomorrow  :D ) There's one about 200 yards from my work and they are doing click and collect.
