personally i would go for a 2 pack over epoxy primer

Do you mean a 2 pack paint straight onto bare metal?

I usually paint my rear sub-frames with red-oxide primer, then give two coats of black tractor enamel. I work it well into the nooks and crannies.

After fitting I coat it with Waxoyl mixed with 20% engine oil and spray it on hot and under a highish pressure. Then leave it until the oil dries off a bit.

Done like that it will never rust so long as it is re-waxoyled every 12 months.

Just trying to work out the benefits of using Epoxy primer or red oxide.

I used etch primer on my front sub frame about 6 years ago - at some point the brake reservoir/clutch reservoir can split or leaked and taken the top coat off the front subframe, but not gone through the primer. How do you find the tractor enamel paint? Ive got a few other parts to paint as well, including brake backing plates, engine steadies etc. I guess the same process should be used for these components as well.

I'm coming to the stage where I need to order some primer and top coat (Black) to paint my front and rear subframes, brake backing plates, and a few other brackets etc.

Does it matter what type/brand of Epoxy primer is used? Also, would Etch primer be suitable?

Thanks

Tom

On my mk1 I used epoxy primer followed by 2k gloss, for ease of application I brush painted it and used a roller an areas that I could, it came out well and is holding up well, on my mk2 I decided to have them zinc coated followed by black powder coating, hopefully this will last a long time, I always spray dinitrol inside enclosed areas. Tractor enamel as mentioned is also a good easy to apply top coat, again I would apply this over epoxy primer, it’s waterproof and I feel is better than etch primer. Epoxy mastic from opine oils is what I used on underside ares, and lechler epoxy on upper bodywork. Although I found high build hb body epoxy good as well.

Just been in contact with the rust busters - the EM121 seems like a decent product. They advised a Zinc primer underneath the Epoxy mastic for best protection - especially on subframes.

Anyone used any other brands of Epoxy mastic?

The POR 15 stuff is good but......it’s very very fussy about surface prep and if not done properly it will just peel off in sheets.  They recommend a lot of cleaning and using a metal prep product of theres that’s basically phosphoric acid.   I have my inside floor pan, boot floor, inside new door skins, a few suspension parts  and inside all the  side sills done.  Plenty of cavity wax and waxoil since The job was done about 5 years ago and all is still good.

Was recommended to me by a vintage car bodywork man that’s pretty wise apart from having to endure some awful country music in his workshop. its a bit pricey though.

Going to tackle the subframes which I got back from the shot blasters recently. I've purchased some EM121, do I need to apply 1 or 2 coats?

Also, if I need to apply 2 coats, how long do no need to leave between each coat?

I've got some tractor enamel paint which will apply over the top.

Just a quick update with my rear subframe coating.

I went with the rustbuster EM121 after speaking to one of their technicians. I've just applied my first of 2 coats to both my front and rear subframes, and my first impressions of the paint is very good. It was a little thick to start with, almost like a paste, took some heavy strokes with the brush to apply. But after adding a bit more of the thinner received with the kit, it soon came a lot easier. I will give another update shortly after applying the second coat and then the top coat.

As I was painting, there are some cavities in which I am unable to access. Should I use the Waxoyl product mixed with engine oil or a similar product like S50 to spray into the cavities? Will this be enough to prevent any rust coming through?

Also, should I spray the whole subframe or just the cavities once my final top coat is on?

Thanks in advance.
