Hi all,

I believe this has already been covered somewhere on thus forum, and in sure people with have a lot of different reviews and expierences, but would like some guidance on what people have expierenced.

I've recently stripped down my rear subframe and getting it shot blasted before commencing the refurb. From what I have read on older threads, painting seems to be the better or preferred option over power coating.

So I have a few questions about the preparation and what paint to use.
1) What is the best type of primer to use if any? Epoxy or Etch?
2) I've heard mixed reviews on the POR15 paint. Is it the best thing to use on bare metal after sand blasting?
3) What other alternative paints and the processes would people recommend besides the above?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Por15 might be very good if you can exactly guarantee following the instructions.I used it thinking that I had and the results have been very poor.Epoxy and some 2pack paint would be my first choice.Steve..

What was it that gave the poor results? I think its had very mixed reviews looking on this forum and other forums. Do you know the difference between a Epoxy primer and an Etch primer?

Thanks, I had a look on the website and looks to be good. Has anyone used this stuff before?

Have a look at Bilt Hambur's website as well, their products tend to get positve reviews.

What I have used I have been happy enough with that I am going to use them when I reach the coating point for my rear subframe.

I know this is not exactly what you asked but I got mine blasted then galvanised then just painted it with a black hammerite type paint over 25years ago and it still as good as the day I did it .

Por15 was the single biggest waste of money on my project. Epoxy primer for me now all the way followed by whatever top coat is convenient.

Is POR15 not a paint over rust paint hence the name? If so would it adhere to clean metal the in the same way?

The Por15 was indestructible but sadly had very poor adhesion to most of the metal, you can peel it off in strips.Epoxy primer is waterproof and sticks well, they paint ships with it.Do not let cost of paint sway you as it is only a small part of the total cost and the difficulty of reworking a poor choice is massive.Rust.co.UK supplies quality gear.Steve..

So a good/any epoxy primer will be ok to use?

What do people recommend for the top coat and any other protection processes? My subframe, brake backing plate and a few other items are being collected today  :proud:

Personally I would galvanise it. That would be best. Otherwise epoxy prime it first then top coat of your choice

I think I'm going to go the Epoxy route. The stuff should be back from blasting after the bank holiday weekend, so have a bit of time to do some research and see what the best approach would be.

With regards to top coat, anything hard wearing or heavy duty would be suitable?

I usually paint my rear sub-frames with red-oxide primer, then give two coats of black tractor enamel. I work it well into the nooks and crannies.

After fitting I coat it with Waxoyl mixed with 20% engine oil and spray it on hot and under a highish pressure. Then leave it until the oil dries off a bit.

Done like that it will never rust so long as it is re-waxoyled every 12 months.
