The original covers just pull off ... if you pull hard enough! I’ve ordered a pair of the Pioneer speakers so will have a play with the original grills and report back, I’ve got a spare pair of grills if I mess up!!

My Pioneer TS-G670 speakers have arrived.

The Rover o/e grill centralises really well on the Pioneer speaker but there’s not really enough purchase to enable it to stay in place, probably solved with a dab of silicon or maybe sticky Velcro would work well.

The “standoff” at the rear is obviously flush with the Pioneer grill, but with the o/e grill it’s still only 2mm which could be rectified with a small neoprene filler or could be left as is, this might depend how much the speaker pulls into the rear shelf fabric when fitting.

I’ve not fitted these in the car yet but can’t see any issues using the o/e grills to keep as much as possible standard.

They’re on a good offer in Halfords at the minute, just bought a set for £17 with my trade card.  Yet to fit them.  Have door speakers fitted into MK 1 metro door pockets too.

Finished fitting them, as per Richard's guide, and the sound quality is much improved. Though, TBF, the originals were 22 years old.

A fiddly job with all the contortionism required when working on Minis. I'm glad I wasn't paying someone an hourly rate!

Depends how fussy/OCD you are about getting the Pioneer Logo straight. On the photograph the red arrow should be the back centre position but would've meant grinding down the lip on the 'U' shaped cutaway, to let the capscrew lay flat. I just put it through the orange spot and blacked the chrome bits with a Sharpie.

I also, new to me, learned about the significance of speaker polarity and corrected the connections on my door-pocket speakers.

Thanks again, Richard, for your input, without which the job wouldn't have been done.

Hi all. Read all of this and found it mega useful. The speakers I bought didn't fit so I am having a spacer made.
Basically it will be 25mm high and fit the new speaker. Internally it will have a step down with a diameter to fit the current hole size (130mm) and most importantly the dreaded 3 holes. My plan is to fix the spacer using 3 holes then screw new speakers into spacer. Will send a photo of it when I have it.

So this is what I came up with. If I am honest I think it is a bit overkill and might make another two that are lower profile. I know it won't be 100% for the 500 purists out there but I think it looks alright and will do for me. Means I don't have to worry about speaker size and profile etc but with a mini it's usually some sort of compromise. Next step is 6x9s under the rear seat. These speakers are amazing if anyone is interested.

I think it looks good, is presumably all reversible anyway, and they won't intrude into the boot much which is nice.

Adding my experiences to this old topic...

What to do with the knackered MPI speakers (XQM101115PMA) with destroyed paper cones? Some years ago I made a repair to the cones with pva and tissue which was reasonably successful but not great and they distort at high volume.

Wanting a reversible solution with the OEM look I found a pair of 6 1/2 JVC speakers (CS J620X ~£20 Amazon without grills) which were a tiny bit larger than the MPI speaker drivers without the grill and plastic grill mount.  With a little fettling of the edges of the JVC speakers with pliers to reshape the edge lip they can be made to fit the plastic mounting reasonably easily.

The speaker grill is fixed by three tabs/extensions which are deformed in the plastic carrier ring, straighten and ease off. The carrier ring pushed off the speaker by easing three holding tabs - equally spaced with one aligning with the screw post opposite wiring terminals. The ring can be gently pushed off the speaker's frame.

The slightly reduced diameter (~1mm all around) speaker driver pushes directly into the grill mount, there are three mounting points in the speaker frames which can be aligned with the tabs on the grill mount.

Two additional holes are needed to be drilled in the JVC speakers' rims, achieved by offering up the old speakers for their position. Each has 3x M5 20mm bolts to act as studs and a normal nut and a nyloc nut to hold and achieve the spacer depth.

The speakers' wiring connectors are swapped over noting polarity of old and new speakers (mark the terminals of MPI speaker should you want to reuse it). Repaint/tape speaker and bolt heads as needed, colour in the 'JVC' bling as wanted etc..

Excluding painting time, it took a couple of hours work with minimal metal cutting, mostly shaping. Fully reversible low cost, low risk speaker mod, the original speaker drivers will be stored in my 'original spares' box and can be reused with minimal effort.

A quick update to this...

Out in the car this morning and the speakers sound great playing New Order. I also have a couple of speakers under the front seats which give a deeper sound-scape in the car - the front speaker are needed for my Bluetooth which seems to run front and rear speakers in series. The front speakers are wired into the ISO plug from a spare ISO connector.

Here's my budget setup: second hand JVC KD-DB67 DAB radio, IO-Play Bluetooth SOT (reused from previous car, controller mounted directly under heater controls), MGF speakers under-seat (work in progress, not sure I will keep them/thinking about dash tweeters to complement) and the JVC speakers above.

Good job!!
