What are the symptoms of a broken crankshaft?

It happened to me on a Viva years ago. Much rumbling then clanging and very sudden stop

when I tried it the engine just went bang and then it was locked and wouldn't rotate.

car was still moving and I could fell it braking. which was the clutch slipping as the engine was locked but the wheels was turning.

Some of the pistons wont be going up and down

My friends 1098 mini still drove with a broken crank.
Broke at the main bearing journal at flywheel end. Lots of knocking and rumbling noises

When I broke a Metty turbo one in a mini, the con rod came straight through the side of the block. That's what first arose my suspicion that all was not well

 

It would have done less damage if I had thrown a hand grenade inside the lump

Not very nice noises, engine she not working any more !!
