Looks like the Smiths tacho in the pic above is set up for positive ground?

looks more like the smiths.
terminal to the right of your wires
but give the back a good clean and you may find some marks.
what number is on the front?

The white wire with the loop on it operates the tach.It connects from the coil feed wire around the loop and back to the coil.It carries the current to the coil and makes the tach work via the loop.You have to remove whatever wire currently is on the coil and fit this in series.It is like the one which was fitted to my MGB.It could easily be positive earth as mine was,it may say on the face.Steve..
