What Type Of Needle For My Su Carb

Best Answer postve , 07 February 2020 - 08:31 PM

Thx retro but going to experiment with a few to draw my own conclusions.

Retroman was simply telling you how it is, not making any suggestions
AAA is no use to you whatsoever in an HIF 44 unless you put a .090" jet in it and that's just a mine field.

Humm this was a while ago and yes figured that out through painful needle changes - was fun though. Ended up with a BCE after going through BDK, BDL, etc etc - I appreciate feedback but reserve the right to screw it up on my own - lol

Thx Pigeonto Go to the full post

Need some advise on needle for my HIF44 as migrating to a stage 3 cylinder head to max out on air flow and enhance power - marrying this to my BP255 CAM which I installed two months ago.

Ok specs as follows:

- 1275
- HIF44 - BFY needle!!
- BP255 CAM
- Calver - cst2001-sport-spec-cylinder-head-large-bore (pending install) currently has 12g1316 x - standard
- electronic distributor
- sport Coil
- maniflow intake
- fletcher LCB - exhaust
- 1.75 exhaust/resonator piping runs into 2.0 fletcher catback exhaust (minimal torque lost for those who are thinking so)

Think that should be enough and she runs great and setting up for the new cylinder head to max out on my build - or at least do the best I can.

Thoughts mates?

A rolling road obtains the best results for a HIF44 - these are a great carb with a variety of needles suited to get great results

Thx And unfortunately not an option on this side of the pond as I personally don't have anyone who can do it, or at least found someone who is capable.

I basically tune myself and drive the hell out of it. I did a bit more review online and looks like I can learn from others with similar setups and hoping I get responses for the same

Thank you no66 as will leverage this as I also have aBDL and ordering an AAA once I install stage 3 head. This chart should help fine tune that decision.

AAA is for a 1 1/2 inch HS4 or HIF38 carb not HIF44

Retro, question for you sir, with my specs what do you think would be optimal and aiming for torque over HP.

I have become sort of a minor wizard at wet sanding the needles

Fit a wideband AFR gauge and make a carb piston lift indicator. It makes needle profiling relatively easy and takes all the guesswork out of it.

Any ideas on lift indicators?

With all those cheapo usb borescopes on Fleabay, drilling a hole in a carb elbow and drawing some graduations on yer piston could be as simple as any.

I made this one. It’s basically a bottle top on the end of some ally tig rod that moves up and down inside a syringe.

Thank you Phil as experimentation by rookies like me can have serious consequences.

I am looking forward to fitting the new head as soon as Keith is complete as a new needle will definitely be in order.

I am open to any other suggestion from others on the board

As its stands with the 255 cam BDL or BDK should have you in the region

With the new head ask Keith...maybe BDP or BDR as a starting point
