.... the grip strip in the bottom of the battery tray? I assume it's a bonded in bitumen strip so is probably easiest removed with a hot air gun and scraper but can anyone confirm?

I've not done one, but I'd go fo thr heat gun method, it works well on interior floorpan soundproof gunge

I've got the same in the bottom of my battery box. It is like a strip of bitumin and snaps easily up you give it a pull at one end. The bit that broke away i've replaced with a blanking plug.
