Link below may help?

"To qualify as a Vehicle of Historic Interest, the vehicle must not be 'substantially changed' from its original specification within the past 30 years, as defined by the Department of Transport/Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency."

How "substantially modified" is it?

On the last Mot for mine, the tester put "substantially modified" on mine because I fitted a roll cage and harnesses.

I thought road tax and MOT exceptions were different. So over 40 years, its tax exempt irrespective of modifications. Its just the MOT thats still required if substantial modifications have been made.

Micra powered has probably pushed it over the threshold... Looks like you're paying tax...

Engine change doesn't necessarily mean it's not MOT and tax exempt.

Check this out:

"

The following are considered acceptable (not substantial) changes if they fall into these specific categories:

in respect of axles and running gear changes made to improve efficiency, safety or environmental performance; "

This is what I thought. But reading it further I am kind of seeing it as though you have to be in the VHI category so MOT exempt then you are eligible to then TAX Exempt.

Reading through I am still unsure. I am going to go to another post office in the morning and see what I can do. As when I mentioned it to the women she just looked confused and said computer says £160 So that's it.

I don't think you will find many Post Office staff will have any specialist knowledge on Historic Tax and MOT rules for a modified Mini.......

You do not need to pay tax on a vehicle over 40 years old, simply change your car’s taxation class to Historic vehicle.
Whether or not your car qualifies as a VHI has no bearing on the tax, only it’s eligibility for no MoT.

Yeh you should be tax exempt, I've got a 1976 with a 1.8 in it, thats tax exempt, taxing of the vehicle is done on age and the engine size has nothing to do with it, like emmisions at the MOT, its done on whatever is older, the vehicle or engine.

MOT exemption wise the vehicle has got to not be "Substantially modified"

How did you manage to pay for yours or even get it tax exempt? I have been to 3 post offices and none have the V70 which is what i believe i need. One also suggested that the computer will tell them that it is eligible for exemption and that the system can be slow to update.

You can download the forms required in link below, the DVLA do not update the system automatically, you have to apply for Historic via the forms and take along with your V5C to Post Office:-
