Has anyone used one of these and are they worth it when a standard leveller is half the price?

I've got my engine to remove and having never done it before I wanted to make my life as easy as possible without wasting cash.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Rope on bell housing always worked for me..

Depends on level of resto.. concourse I would say it is maybe worth it. Everything else rope or chain would do..

The Minisport hoist tool probably works well but I have always found that lifting using a lifting bracket on the head stud between plugs two and three puts the engine at the correct angle for lifting  http://www.minispare...|Back to search

I've always lifted Engines that have a Rod Shift Box from the front centre Head Stud.

In the early days, I didn't use a bracket, just slipped a link of 3/8" (10 mm) Chain over the Stud and put the Nut back on finger tight. The Chain I used was about 10" long and I made a loop in the other end with a shackle.

 

I found lifting this way, tilted the Engine at just the right angle for it to come out without any wrestling what so ever.

 

More recent years, I've 'up-graded' to an angled bracket.

 

I use the same method for refitting the engine too, only, when it lands on the sub frame, it will be a bit too far forward. I find I can slid them back easy with an application of a foot or just lifting it on the Trolley Jack and rolling it back a little.

IIRC that type of lift tool is based on the original one that was used for the engines with the remote housing.

But not really needed.

Here's a lifting tool suggested by the Factory. It's not one they sold, there are some instruction on how to make one. Note while this will work with the Rod Shift type Gearboxes, it was intended to give that bit of extra tilt needed for the Remote and original Magic Wand type gearboxes;-

I've had my MPi engine out a few times. The one bracket on the center head stud makes life so so so much easier if it's your first time. It tilts the engine perfectly.

by the way it's possible to get the engine out without having to disturb the brake master cylinder. This will also make your life easier.

Just for clarity; you do have to move the master cylinder, but you don't have to remove it and disturb the fluid.

I’ve used both the L and the minisport type recently. The minisport one I borrowed from my friend after using it on his car and it’s a bit more stable and just had the perfect angle on it. The other advantage is you can use the top loops when you want to keep the engine vertical.

Yes, it will work on an MPI but honestly, I wouldn't go to that trouble.

 

As per Unburntfuelinthe morning has shown does the job without compromise.

 

In fact, just thinking about this a bit more, picking the engine up by the Centre Stud will still allow you to tilt the engine side to side, if needed, as Wiggy mentioned, to possibly get around the Servo.

 

The more fancy engine lifting brackets, will make that task quite a lot harder.
