Hi All, 

 

I'm hoping to view this coop shortly.

I need a hand on identifying originality.  It has matching numbers and heritage certificate.

 

1967, 998cc

 

The wheel arches look very aftermarket, otherwise I cant spot anything obvious.

 

Any advice really gratefully received before I open my chequebook!

You can't really tell a lot from that! (except that it hasn't got the window trims). Take an expert with you

Is there an advert online that we can look at?

Off the bat I can see the wheel arches are aftermarket as are the wheels and as johnv has said there should be a chrome trim around the door windows.

Matching numbers doesn’t really mean a great deal on a Minis as the majority of the tags are easily removed and swapped. What you want is a large history file and lots of old pictures.

You could try on the Mk1-3 Cooper and S Facebook group if there's an expert local to you who wouldn't mind going with you for a viewing. Something I recently read was that a good quick litmus test is the boot board brackets which will be spot welded in a Cooper. This is, of course, no guarantee. Good luck! It's a minefield out there.

 

edit: p.s. You should grab a copy of John Parnell's excellent book "The Original Mini Cooper and S" he details all the production changes for each model based on production date and body number.

 Hi Josh, Yes do you think that affects the value that much then?  Ie is it still worth the asking?

Problem with a reshell is how much of original car was retained, some reshells are just log book rebuilds, some are genuine and only shell from donor car is used, technically any shell can be restored now but in the past this was not the case so many coopers and cooper s cars received replacement shells. The value would be more on a complete matching number car, main thing to check is if the replacement shell is from same year as there are differences.

I have only very quickly looked at the ad but immediately noticed the lack of boot board brackets and door trims, I am guessing there are probably more incorrect or missing features. The main thing of course to check is that it is has the correct engine. Ultimately it comes down to what you are happy with and if you wanted to spend the time and money to make it more 'correct'. I do think for the money you could probably do better though.
