Hi a new member here. Picked up a 95 mini tartan jap import yesterday. The aircon stopped working on the way home so was going to get it regassed. Does anyone know how much gas it takes as the owners books are all in Japanese. ?. Thanks.

How do you mean by "the aircon stopped working"? If it was working fine then just stopped, either you've lost all the gas at once or it's another fault. As they approach the need to be re-gassed there's a gradual drop in cooling ability over a long period of time, it tends not to be instant.

94 would be a R134a system. The system will need around 350g-375g for complete refill

As already mentioned, suddenly not working probably means something else has gone. It happens. Parts are more easily sourced from Japan for AC parts.

There’s a couple of good Facebook groups for Japanese Mini owners, I help run one of them; JDM Classic Mini Owners Club

The other is Classic Minis Japan New & Used Parts; run by a chap called David Ainley

Thanks for the reply. Was having a play about yesterday and noticed when turning the blower on inside that if it’s turned on fully the compressor doesn’t kick in but if it only put on a little bit it does.

Doesn’t sound like you need a re-gas then.

Difficult to diagnose from here but it sounds like it’s either your switch/blower set or potentially the Thermostat. The AC Thermostat is a common thing to break (an age thing). The AC Register is also a common failure point on Minis of this age.

Both the Thermostat and Register can be replaced without removing the dash.

Having more of a play today. When the blower switch is turned on slightly the compressor kicks in but when put on further so that the blower is working the compressor switches off. Any ideas how to test the other components. Thanks.

As Pops said, the thermostat is usually the problem. It's behind the passenger dash pocket. I have replaced them in 3 JSpec Minis.

My air con works well ... a little too well at times which has made me question whether the thermostat might need replacing, where did you source them?

You can only get them in Japan. David Ainley who runs the "Classic Minis Japan New & Used Parts" Facebook page can help you

Did anyone solve this issue as mine is doing the same as above - and I've just changed the switch and the compressor, what's the register thing?
