As Nick and Imack have mentioned, the sleeves / tubes should be locked on the Pin when the nut on the Pin is done up correctly. 2 of these sleeves are about (or should be !) 15 thou longer than the area of the Pin where they mount, of course, when you put them on with their rubbers, they'll appear much loner again.

 

I do put a very thin lick of grease on the pin, but be sure none is going to end up on the rubber. I only do this so they don't rust.

I would have to guess then, when  torquing up the pin,  locking the bush sleeves to the pin is achieved though compression of an 15 thou extra length of the sleeves.

Just a tip here - for what ever it's worth. I assemble the bushes in to the arms with a lick of rubber grease, then fit the pin through them, a big washer on the other side, then put that in the press, pressing on the Pin to fully seat the bushes. They do pop back out a bit, but I find when assembling in to the subframe, it all comes together that bit easier.

As a final tip here, I further press the Pin in to the subframe using vice grips (I must make a tool one day), all the way home, then do up the nut. I avoid trying to pull the Pin in by the nut.

Not really as they are locked between the pin and the subframe.

Thanks Nick , that explains it then... don't know how that idea escaped me. So  the sleeves can be safely greased!

Just returned from the workshop having assembled bushes into lower arms;

 

I found the smallest, invisible smidging of rubber grease was enough to get them moving easily. 

 

Also  if not using a pin but some vice,  to insert bushes a good distance into  eye of the  arm,  its important to keep the eye of the arm faced nice and square to the clamping device  all the while,  before any further clamping with force, to get the bushes to meet in the centre of the eye. 

    Otherwise, you may clamp at an angle and easily raise the edges of the thin sleeve as they meet at an angle. They must meet square on at that point. It can also cause rubber to get nipped where they should meet,  and raise so that they cannot meet properly.

 

It's good to have both rubbers in by the same amount, so they meet in the centre; Therfore, as they meet before applying further force,  examine to see if they are meeting fairly centrally in the eye (i.e one is not protruding more than the other) and, if not  slip a suitable large socket over the shorter protusion to get them both to move toward the centre to correct it.

 

 

Once you've go them centrally placed,  best to  continue to clamp with the pinion inserted, whilst  the arm is held in a vice.

 

When done, you can keep the pin with a  large washer and the nut done up tightly, bushes held in position until you are ready to re-assemble the lower arms onto the motor carriage ('car'). The mini one.
