I have a K& N fitted on my MPI but was wondering what other people’s experiences or set ups are. I was contemplating returning back to standard

I have K & N filters in all my cars. If you look at the airflow charts you will see that the K & N filters stays constant over a much longer time period than a standard filter, that pretty much starts choking up as soon as you fit it. If you have the David Vizard book "Tuning the A series engine", there is lots of info on the K & N.

Nothing against them, apparently the pancake style on a mini isn't very good, if you do want a K & N, keep standard airbox and just replace the element.  Very old, but still relevant article here:

Dave Vizard explains how the K&N filters works

He's tested K&N filters against paper elements on a flow bench. K&N clean down to microns even when covered in dirt and they flow almost as well as having no filter installed.
The air filter info starts about 4 minutes into his video below:-.

I'd fit the KnN type, then just drive the car to let the ECU learn the new parameters

Does the 65mm ducting fit over the original snout or have you removed it?

Just fit a K&N in the airbox, don't worry about drilling aditional holes in the airbox, they are not required.

Furthermore my brother had an interesting one recently, a chap who had a pipe running from the front to the airbox for "cool air" was having all sorts of carburation and wierd running issues.  As soon as the bonnet was opened my brother just laughed, removed the pipe much to the chaps distain and was told give it a run now.  He came back with a huge grin saying it now runs fine.  He said how can that be, I'm running the pipe to get cool ram air.

Well have you ever had the window of your car open say 3/4 and at certain speeds you get that horrible buffeting, thats exactly what was going on.  So I wouldn't recommend that you do it on a mini.

Also at any reasonable speed the amount of fresh air going into the bonnet means that your carb or injection setup is getting cool air anyway.
