I'm hoping TMF can help me with something. I had a 1971 850 being restored and I'm looking for information on the 'correct' number plate to use. Can somebody who was around in the UK during '71 please tell me which is correct?

 

Most of the brochures from '70, '71, '72 show cars with a white riveted raised digits on a black background.

 

But the 1971 850 catalogue shows Black/white riveted raised digits on a white/yellow background. I've been told that during this period customers where able to option the 'safety plate' as paid extra.

Although the modern white/yellow reflective plates were available from 1968 as an option on new cars in the UK, many continued to carry the black & silver number plates into the early seventies. Also back then many motorists with older cars, like myself (see link below) used to update our old cars with the new style plates.

So for your year of Mini either would be correct.  What was fitted was either personal preference or probably most commonly whatever was on the car when you bought it.

Black and silver, option 3. I was lead to believe that the black and silver plates were expensive to make so by the 60 the black and white plastic letters was more common?

My '71 Minor Traveller came with the original rear plate. It's a reflective type but with riveted on Bluemels type raised numbers and letters. Took me ages to find some more to replace the modern plate that had been stuck on the front.

Thanks Panky! Those are what I think my car would have had but was put off ordering a set due to all the catalogues showing black with white versions.

As mab01uk said the reflective type were an option at the time, black and white would also be correct. As mine came with the reflective ones I thought I'd stick with them.

Well to be pedantic mab01uk said black and silver, not black and white. But I love your woody! The lady across the road from me growing up had a green one. I used to walk past it on my way to and from school every day. I can still remember how sad I was when she sold it & replaced it with an Saab

I like the punched aluminium ones;   they don't seem to show up on speed cameras.

My 72 mini 1000 had its original reflective plates with riveted alloy characters when I bought it in 1984. I replaced them with Hills pressed black and silver plates in 1987 when I changed the colour of the car. It still wears the Hills plates today, 32 years later although the front one is a bit battered and split from getting bent over the years.
Don't know about speed cameras but the pressed back and silver plates are recognised by the dartford tunnel anpr cameras.
