If you look again at the slinger you can see what almost looks like a milled area of damage where the extended joining pins appear to be fouling. Lucky it didn't take the circlips out!

Is that chain joining link causing the problem? It's taller than the other links.

Well spotted.

So with the undamaged flinger/slinger/thrower there is 0.020" clearance:

However:

But:

So if I'd just fitted the chain the other way round it would've been fine.

Lucky it didn't take the circlips out!

Indeed, that would have been unfortunate.

If you fitted it the other way around would that joining pin clear the countersunk screw heads?
Mine is very close with kent cams vernier duplex and Iwis chain.

Just looked at two I have in the garage and the F is on the side with the raised middle ... convex side? I've also found one of the other style. I've got an iwis chain but don't remember seeing a joining piece. I'm sure mine is one piece and from Minispares

Any more sound advise from the experts on which way it should go? Reading the Haynes page 2A-6 Point 26 states "put the oil thrower to the crankshaft with the concave side forward"

What now, to me the F is on the convex side of the flinger - decisions decisions :X

I've not tried it but will the timing cover clear the flinger if the flinger's fitted back to front?

If you look again at the slinger you can see what almost looks like a milled area of damage where the extended joining pins appear to be fouling. Lucky it didn't take the circlips out!

What I can't understand is how the engine ran at all, when, from the marks on the oil thrower, in two places the chain is quite clearly missing links.

Difficult to tell without physically having the parts in your hand to inspect but there do appear to be some very light marks in the two 'undamaged' areas of the flinger. Maybe the flinger's slightly distorted in those areas. Some of the gouges in in the rest of the flinger are deeper than others too.

I fitted the duplex kit 1500 miles ago as the simplex rattle was driving me mad.  Oddly there were no horrible noises coming from the timing chain cover area despite the resulting damage.  It was running rather nicely too.  The engine's now been removed for unrelated reasons.  I only discovered this problem whilst stripping the engine.
