These may have been enlarged to enable the door to be fitted decently. Quite common to find them like this. Mine are slotted to enable the door to be raised in the cutout.

There are two sections there, the A pillar which is a lot thicker then there is flitch section, the piece you can see from within the front wing. It’s unusual to see both sections rot out.

Post up a picture if you can.

Here you go mate the flitch is wafer thin pitted heavily and will need changing and what you see there part of the pillar is also wafer thin the pillar itself is solid and clean inside

This is what it looks like when you disassemble the A post

This is thicker and is integral to providing the strength that you need.

And this is the part on the Minispares website

If you look at the picture i posted of my A pillar stiffener you can see there are not that many spot welds holding it all together. 16 all in all BUT thats just the post, there are some obviously where the fitch attaches as well.

Ah that explains a few things
So if the rot is confined to just the flat section the hinge sits on and the rest is clean from grot could a new flat be welded either in situ or by drilling out the spot welds removing the stiffener repairing and then then sblending the welds ect andrefitting back into position ?

Yes in theory but I would say this, there is always something lurking that is unseen so personally I would seriously consider popping he whole thing out. That way you won’t be wasting your time later on.
