Changing the head gasket on my '78 Canadian Mini 1000 and have a few questions:

1. There's a hole (green) on the engine block that seems to be blocked off, but there's a corresponding hole in the head which is not. Is this normal? I searched online and it seems some engines and heads have the green hole blocked, but some don't. Should I block the hole in the head too?

2. The red hole was full of sludge and a little prying opened it up, but it's not completely unblocked. I don't want to poke too hard there in case it's supposed to be blocked. Should I make sure it's completely unblocked?

The green circle on the block is not a hole, the gasket and the cylinder head have a hole that's why there is a mark there. The red circled holes are coolant holes, smaller than the others because the coolant pump is right underneath.

Ah thanks! So I should just make sure the red one is not blocked.

Also, why is there a hole (green) in the head which doesn't do anything?

not needed. but good to have when casting.

you will not be surprised how many times people ask about these holes. they are different sizes. the block and head dont have matching holes. thats the way it is.
