Hi Everyone

First time Ive used this forum, I have done a search but couldn't find specifically what I was looking for. My question is regarding repairing the inner wing & scuttle closing plate. Its a 1990 cooper & when I bought the car I noticed the carpets were soaked with water. I thought it was coming from the sunroof seal, however I now think the water has been coming in through the inner wing near the vent hole. A closer look has revealed it is corroded in the vent area. Further prodding from under the wing I discovered under sealer the closing plate has rotted out.

The car has been previously restored & the scuttle, wings & A panel seem to be free of rust.

I guess its impossible to replace the closing plate with out removing both wing & A panel? If so is it possible to remove these without destroying them & can the wing & A panel be removed as one - (my thinking is to minimise paint repairs when they are refitted). The rest of the car with the exception of the bottom of the door frames is rust free with a good paint job so I don't really want to go to a full respray.

Ive attached 2 pics one from under the wing & the other from inside the car.

Thanks

Alan

You can do this without removing the wing but the A panel ideally needs to come off. HOWEVER if you have the right tools then neither has to come off.

So ideally you will need a pneumatic die grinder and a ball and oval carbide burr. Use these to remove the spot welds. Job done.

Have a look at Project Paddy in my signature, its all in there at the very beginning

Cheers Neil, (nice car) it looks doable. I have the burr so it gives me a good excuse to buy a die grinder! - screw fix doing one for a shade over £21 ! Probably not the quality one I used to borrow when I was working but hopefully will do a job.
