Curious to know which idler gear bearings (seem to be 2 types for pre-A+) are best for helical gears.

Not sure which particular two types you've been looking at there Rick!
There was 2 sizes in the Pre-A+ stuff and not interchangeable as the OD are different.
A Caged type in Torrington Brand is the best way to go with these.
Be aware, while I haven't yet seen them in these bearings (as I no long use them), there are loads of Counterfeit Bearings about for our Gearboxes nowadays.

The reason I've asked...
Built a +100 1098 with RE cam, RE +100 pistons, good std/std crank, 12G295 head with hardened ex. seats/Ivey race valves, S springs, Calver 1.4:1 steel rockers, MED damper, HIF44 & Cooper Freeflow ex., 123 distributor etc. All rotating bits balanced
Completely rebuilt hybrid cr gearbox, new 2 & 3 gears, shifter forks, bearings, comp. layshaft, comp. baulk rings, crosspin diff etc.
All new Orange clutch diaphragm & plate, lightened back plate & flywheel.
All properly assembled with carefully set up idler thrusts.
Idler gear bearings blew out on the ALCAN 5000 Summer Rally on the Alaska Hwy. in Canada's Yukon. Mini went on the sweep trailer after 1,500 miles.
Fortunately crank cleaned up, straight & polished std/std so rebuild underway.
I have driven Torrington H 1212 bearing out of early remote box we are using as original box & drop gear housing were both trashed. Have also driven out a German Schaeffler SCH 1212 INA bearing from a later rod change box.
Have ordered Schaeffler SCH 1212s for the rebuild. Suspicious of some bearings offered with 11 vs 14 needles on major UK sites.
Those that failed were marked KOR. Don't anyone buy them. Don't use them. Don't trust anyone who sells them.

The failed KOR bearing cup...not one needle was left in either cup on disassembly and only 3 remnant needles were found in the case. (Torrington H 1212 & Schaefler SCH 1212 INA in background)

Picked up new Schaeffler Group German made SCH 1212 INA idler bearings today. They are direct replacement for the earlier Torrington bearings.
Have advised our local supplier (buys mostly through Mini Spares) that these bearings are available - my cost picking them up $8.24 (incl. taxes) Canadian, per bearing.
My Rally co-driver is building a transmission in Sweden & found KOR marked on drawn bearing cup lip in his bag from Mini Spares. Told him to toss in the skip, use for ice fishing weights but not to install in his transmission.
Motion Industries/B.C. Bearing Engineers does not sell KOR branded bearings and did not know where they might have been made..."maybe in China".
