Thanks for all the help. Took me ages to get around to this (babies getting in the way!!).
Carefully ground both off with the shocks removed. Took a while as carefully not to cut into the subframe. Never saw a thick spacer, it was all one thing. But then again it's a 1971 car.
Was a bit rusty under there so took the opportunity to do a bit of painting.
New ones went in easy enough by holding the nut from underneath (cones still in) and turning the bump stop. Not mega tight but I put a lock washer on.
