The 'best way' is to get someone else who's done it before do it for you - failing that: Disconnect battery. Remove alternator, carb(s) brake master and servo and any other parts blocking removal. Split top balljoints on front suspension which will allow you to pop the drive shafts out of the diff (drain oil before you do this)  disconnect gear selector from back of gearbox (by driving rollpin out) Disconnect control cables/speedo cable. Check nothing is still connecting the engine to the car including wires such as the big cable to the starter motor. Undo bolts on engine mounts and any steadies (head and gearbox usually) Use straps or chains and an engine crane or block and tackle to lift out. The Haynes manual will help you with the detail of removing it if you haven't done much mechanicking before.

Good description from johnR. Just remember it doessn't lift straight out - you have to lift it so it tilts backwards a bit to get the dif out. Try to adjust the straps/chains so you are lifting above the front head studs, i.e. in front of the cg, and it should tilt back just right.

Welcome to TMF

You don't need to crack the ball joints to pull the pot joints out of the diff

It's a lot easier to  the pot joints out initially and then juggle them out by swinging the engine once its lifted

You can keep it on its wheels then too

Reverse procedure when dropping the engine back in
