Hi guys can't find the right info, I've got an odyssey racing 40 battery ( https://www.merlinmo...GkaAoQ-EALw_wcB ) I'm unsure as to wether it's sealed or standard.

My charger has 2 settings

Cheers

it is neither it is a dry cell battery. you dont want to be using any old charger of you will kill it.

what charger have you got?

Hi,

It's not a dry battery it's an AGM, which has acid gel absorbed into matting so it won't leak.

You do need to use a charger suitable for AGM batteries and nothing else.

there was me looking at the battery picture rather than words. Yes and AGM battery so a suitable Ctek with AGM setting is what you need.

My phones being a pain and won't let me upload a pic of the charger grrr

But it's an older version (only by about 6 years) than this one https://www.halfords...0AaAnBuEALw_wcB

Hi,

If the battery still works after 6 years you've got away with it. If the battery doesn't work anymore you've killed it!

Cheers  :proud:

So would I need a different alternater for that type of battery then?

no the alternator is fine.

using the Ctek with the recondition feature (recond) can help improve the battery  condition. the normal charger can cause problems.

Straight from Ctek regarding the recondition (recon) mode...

"Recond is made for remixing flooded acid inside the battery, called stratification.
Stratification is when the acid inside the battery gets layered. As long as the acid and the water of the electrolyte in the battery are well mixed, the battery works as it should. But if the acid and water separate into layers, the battery just cannot be charged anymore regarding the parts that are layered, not by the alternator, nor by a charger.
So, acid that gets layered inside a battery causes loss of capacity.
Acid that has got layered cannot store voltage as well as a healthy battery, which has the optimal acid weight, 1.28 mmol. In batteries where the electrolyte is layered (stratified) has a high weight acid assembled on the bottom.
AGM batteries are not flooded, and does not suffer from stratification, neither do GEL batteries.
That is why we cannot promise that you get a positive effect by using recond on AGM batteries so we do not recommend that.
For GEL batteries, recond is not recommended either, due to that using too high voltage can dry the gel inside the battery and weaken the battery instead of empowering it."

So in other words don't use the Recon mode on an AGM and or a sealed Gel battery!  Recon mode overcharges the battery so it gasses and if the pressure builds up enough on a sealed battery it will vent and you lose capacity/damage the battery as you cannot top up these.

The AGM setting on the CTEK has higher bulk charge and absorption phase voltage of 14.7 v compared to 14.4 v for a normal lead acid battery.  That is the main difference when charging AGM compared to normal lead acids.  The Odyssey is a sealed battery with 14.4 - 14.8 v cyclic charge voltage so even if you used the CTEK standard charge mode on it, it would be fine.  AGM's also liked to be charged low and slow.

I doubt that you will have done any damage to the battery so long as your battery charger does not output more than 14.8v.  Much more damage will occur if any lead acid battery is left in a flat or partially discharged state.  If it was that critical we would have special alternators for charging AGM batteries in cars!

Halfords website doesn't give me much confidence in that charger ... often sold with jumpleads and jumpstarter ... mmmm! ?
