why do the belts only last 20k miles? that seems very short. what change interval do places like minispares recommend?

length = longevity, also the tooth profile isnt very big on these belts.
one reason modern manufacturers have gone back to chains is they can damp out vibrations better these days so they arnt transmitted to the valve train, better crank damping due to dual mass flywheels etc, and also varivble cam timing that works from oil actuation is good at absorbing the vibes.
