Hello everyone,

My mini is playing up (again >_< ). It's a 1988 red hot with a 1275 metro engine with a HIF44 carb. After having driven fine for a long time, suddenly the car started sputtering and stalling. I've replaced the plugs (which were completely black). and the car fired up perfectly however, when revving, the sputtering starts again right away and the car stalls. The car also starts shortly after starting without any revving.

The problem must be inside the HIF44 carb but I am unsure what to check. I hope you guys can point me in the right direction. Would a carb refub kit be necessary or should I first check the carb to find the problem? (Dashpot has been topped up, so this is not the issue)

Regards,

I would open it up and have a look. most likely something gummed up. a clean should be sufficient.

You can get a service kit for about £30, but probably don’t need it, just take it apart and blast everything with a can of carb cleaner

If you're going to the effort of removing and stripping it, it would be daft to not rebuild it with a proper overhaul kit. If it's not been done before the seals will be well past their best.

Phil.

I had this on a metro, it was the choke seal that was leaking. As though the choke was always on, didn't do it all the time. A new little o ring seal fixed it.

Yeah, I was gonna say choke seals too.

I've cleaned the carb by soaking it in carb cleaner for 24 hours. Took off the pot, and float chamber components first.  Took it out and blew it dry using compressed air. Put it back on and still the same problem. I did not dissasemble the throttle or choke linkage. Choke seals sounds plausible but I'm not sure where the seals are located.

Regards,

The choke assy comes out and the seals are on it, it's a rotating barrel with holes in so when it rotates it let's the extra fuel in on choke... If the seals are iffy it'll randomly piss extra fuel through.

Burlen has pretty good documentation on their site:

Somewhere in the parts sections are very good exploded view photographs.

Thanks, I had a look and the inner rubber was perished. I've replaced it for a new one. I'll post before and after pictures when I get to a computer.

Fingers crossed this fixes it. Trying it tomorrow

Ok, tried it out this morning. Now works a lot better, doesn't seem to flood and die anymore. It does run a little rough in higher rpm but I've only driven it down the road 500m. I'll try a longer drive where it'll warm up properly in a bit!

Thanks for the help everyone.

If someone is in need of the rubber choke seals (without the whole gasket set stuff) I could send them in a letter as I have loads of those sizes now. Just send me a pm

EDIT

Just went for another drive and it didn't even make it out of the street. Had to push it back. Seems to be the same issue as before. The car revved smoothly with the clutch disengaged but with the clutch engaged, it was stuttering and losing power until it died.

I'd look at the float valve, it could be worn and letting by, or could be getting debris in it. Also worth adding an in line filter

I've been trying to figure out why it's not working and it turns out the rubber rings I've used to replace the broken one dissolve in petrol! they become soft and brittle when soaked in fuel! I went out to buy other rings and these seem to stay together however the fit is very tight. This means the rubber ring frays on the choke hole it passes on the way into the shaft letting fuel bypass the choke mechanism once again. Not sure what the fix could be now. Are the rings in a carb refurb kit special?

well they are designed for the job. ones from your local hardware store will not be suitable.
