Going Straight At 2 O’Clock

My son’s 1987 Mini Advantage has a steering issue. When driving straight, the steering wheel is all square at 12 O’Clock, he’ll turn a corner say a right, and when he has straightened up the wheels finds the steering wheel facing 2 O’Clock. Similarly this may happen in the other direction and the steering wheel will end up at 9 O’Clock. The rack is a new one fitted by a garage. Any thoughts as to reason/cause would be very much appreciated.

Mmm, could be one of several things,
Steering rack not clamped up tight to the mount, pinch bolt not tight causing the splines to slip on the column.
Whatever it is stop driving it as its dangerous.

as above don't drive until fixed
get the garage to recover it , if they fitted the rack
sounds like the rack has worked loose in the 'U' clamps (4 nuts on the toe board)
or pinch bolt not tight / incorrectly fitted , less likely is the steering wheel loose on column (I think this would be obvious)
even less likely somehow front subframe loose / mountings failed / moving , when dropped to fit the rack
best of luck
edit - get the garage to check the splines on the bottom of column , are ok - not worn / damaged

As Sonikk and Sledgy has suggested, sounds like the U Bolts are loose.
