Hi all,

I will soon be doing some work on my 1995 Rover Cooper to improve the looks and the ride quality (as much comfort as is possible with a Mini is the goal)

I will be getting all new rubber cones all round, going from 12 to 10 inch wheels with the help of new discs and getting all new shocks all round too.

The problem is there is a lot of options when it comes to shocks, I originally was going to get Gaz Adjustable and adjust them to the smoothest ride, but if there is a better option I'd love to know!

I have heard too many stories about Gaz not being particularly good so i will be investing in a set from this lot instead

Have a look at KYB Gas-Adjust shocks instead.

Protech. Wouldn't go with anything else on a mini.

I'd use protech on a mini where the best is needed (ie a quick mini to be really thrown around) and kyb gas a just on anything else. Indeed, I had the kyb's on a very well sorted cooper (88hp, fully adjustable suspension etc) that was used mainly for throwing around the lanes at ridiculous speeds and the kyb's handled superbly. The car also rode well around town and there was no faffing with settings - just fit and enjoy.

I use SPAX on my rally cars and have never had any problems with them on Minis.
Just don't set them too hard. Adjust them to suit your requirements starting off soft and winding them up as necessary.
Standard OE specification rubber cones are best for the road with it set to standard ride height.
It is not really possible to get a Mini to give the sort of smooth ride like a modern car gives.

KYB Gasadjust-just fit and forget.

I used Spax adjustable on my kit car and they rusted quickly and stopped being adjustable.

KYB Gasadjust is perfect.

good price, smaller diameter as the original ones, dont rust so much, they are comfort but also sporty if you need it.

Gasadjust is a mixture of a gas and oil damper and combinate the pro of both worlds.

I’ve just removed Spax adjustables from one of my minis. I just couldn’t get on with them. Instead I fitted KYB gas adjust ones instead (albeit £150 cheaper). This coupled with a 40mm lower ride height via a set of hi-los and new rubber cones, the ride is perfect. The ride is firm enough and is still very compliant. The grip with Yoko A008s is very good also. The roads where I live in Devon are quite bumpy so this has had a bearing on my findings no doubt. If you drive on nice smooth tarmac everywhere there are most likely better options. But I’d recommend my set up to anyone.

Thanks guys. So currently my mini is using the factory shocks, will there be a significant/noticeable improvement when going from old stock to the new KYB gas-a-just?

Yes, a much smoother, less choppy ride
