Hi Bob,
Just completed 500 miles running in my engine in on cheap 20w50 oil and hardly used a drop and it doesn't leak any oil (yet)!
Going to have to get round to changing over to a decent oil soon and start giving it the beans!
Your consumption sounds very low too.
Cheers, Steve.

My 998 with 100,000+ miles is weeping from the oil filter seal(all my minis do, just a light dampness bit filters are tight) and the gear selector seal... It done 500 miles over a weekend and used about 150 ml... My dad's Yamaha motorcycle used 1 pint per 1000 miles running

I would say that's not bad, about right too me.

Whats the point in using a cheap oil at the time an engine needs the best conditions possible? Makes.no.sense.

Because friction modifying additives in good oils prevent the rings bedding in properly.

Yes, and also the main bearing shells

Bs. Sorry.
There is proper running in oil, bearing shells dont bed in.
Your cheap oil is the perfect to ruin a cam ( and the rest of the engine while the shrapnel is pumped round and round). Maybe its me,but I cant see why people skimp 25£ on oil after putting 100's in an engine.

I was recommended cheap oil for running in the engine. The cam was bedded in by starting the engine and holding the revs at 2500 for 20 minutes. The engine is now run in and will now benefit from dropping the oil and re-filling with a good quality oil.
It pulls like a train and is one of the quietest A+ engines I’ve heard.
Cheers, Steve.

Yes they do, to match the crank shape.
I use comma classic oil, £16 a gallon... Does the job

If they don't match the crank shape when you fit them, the crank needs regrinding .. it should be perfecting round. This is also why some engines need the bearing caps line bored to make sure they too are round and don't deform the shells when you tighten them.

My newly built 1132 is using about 1litre per 100 miles.
Think it’s knackered already!
Something isn't right there ?
