Full rebuild about to start. A very original car. I'll be taking lots of photographs for reference.

Hi,

Wow that looks amazingly original and not massively rotten either!  :D

They can be really nasty under the wood though  O_O

Cheers  :proud:

Nice to see another woody being done, is it a smooth roof like mine?

Looks like it needs alot less panels

@fiestaharry yes it's a 1961 smooth roof. Needs quarter repairs, all the front panels and a full floor at least. Cheers

The instrument binnacle is like I've never seen before. On the left hand as you look at the speedo face there is a toggle switch with the red/white wires attached so I'm assuming that's the instrument lighting, but there was another identical switch on the opposite side. Anyone know what this one is for?

Also a first for me, there is a rheostat / potentiometer where the choke cable would normally be.

Hi,

I think the other switch is an additional switch for something. They originally just had that one for the clock illumination I think.

Cheers  :proud:

I will be following this with great interest. Big fan of the early mini travellers! Good luck.

Carried on stripping out the car today.

I was fretting about struggling to remove the rear side windows. I shouldn't have worried in the end, there were no screws on the lower rail whatsoever on either side. I'm not sure what kept the windows in!

I'm not particularly worried about the state of the body (yet!). Original as is practical. I will probably build a 1098/295 that I have but will retain the 850. Interestingly, when I cleared the parcel shelf out I found new valve stem oil seals and also a new bmc baulk ring so I'm guessing the original engine and box need some work.

The front seats and rear seat base are tatty, chewed and torn. it would be nice to find some original replacement covers. The Newton ones are nice but I would rather retain some character.

No after your mk1 she doesn't look to bad at all. The 1989 Mini I am doing now is far worse than this everything but roof is getting replaced and even the roof needs welding...

I like the sound of having a slightly bigger engine in there for the practical use side, those rear seats look nice and maybe you could glue some of the wholes back together to retain its character.

Newton ones are great but bloody expensive and I think can make a mini look over restored sometimes.
