My apologies if asked before, but I struggled to find an answer.

My first car was a mini mayfair 900cc, automatic and I drove it rather like a manual (lived in a hilly area so was better to drive this way).  this car is now in mini heaven.

Now I have another Mini mayfair 1000cc automatic.  I drives well in Drive.  But it doesn't change well from 1-2-3-drive and drive-3-2-1.  It's as if the physical location of the gearstick isn't corresponding where cogs, doodas and thingymajigs are inside the engine.

So, for example, the stick says it's in 2nd.  But it remains in 1st.  Unless I give the stick and wiggle and jiggle, then it changes to 2nd.  Same 2 - 3.  Same 3 - Drive.

It makes me wonder if there's a simple adjustment that needs to be made?  So that the physical location of the gear lever is 'telling the truth' / in synch with the engine/transmission?

ps, If it's of relevance, I don't think the 'kickdown' works.  I don't recall it ever being needed/working on my first car, come to think of it...

pps, recently changed oil to 20/50 (I know there's debate over that, but didn't make a difference to above problem)

Sounds like the shift cable might need adjusting.

Hi FS. Sounds promising! Not too major (?). So this would be like a tightening/ loosening procedure to bring things back to alignment? The Haynes explains how to get to things. Very little about such fine tuning, however :(

Yes it does sound like the shift cable needs fiddling with, like FS says.  Maybe even lubrication?  I've not had to mess with the one on my auto Mini.  What I will say is, my car (1991) goes so much better when you shift manually.  In drive, it struggles to get up hills at low speed, unless you absolutely floor the gas.  This one a 24000 mile car, I'm sure it's not right...

Adjustment on these is important as damage can occur if they are not right.

It is easy and don't be put off. Some patience is really all that's needed and a few road tests.

There's some info here that may help

Thanks for the link.  The diagram doesn't look like my mini's automatic lever, however.  Is it the same procedure?

Yes that's the one. Thanks for digging that out! I thought maybe you pull or slacken something, like odd millimetre here or there. But it seems just dismantling it and reassembling might 're-synch' things?

Looking at the Haynes manual and your picture, it makes more sense now. The instructions are pretty sketchy in the Haynes manual. It also makes you loop into adjustments. By this, I mean push in '2 detents'. The check gear functionality. Then repeat of not working well. Why repeat the same thing again then? What you you take more in, or more out, if the first attempt didn't work? Not confuddled

I don't have much experience with them, but there is or can be a bit of to-ing and fro-ing.

One thing I found on my late Brother's car was that the cable had worn and there was just no way to get the adjustment right.
